City Guide: Rome
Pianostrada Laboratorio di Cucina
This is Roman street food at its very best.
This diminutive café tucked behind the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere might be small but what they lack in size, they make up for in deliciousness. For starters, the bread, rolls and foccacia are baked onsite and used to create delicacies such as a squid ink bun cushioning a bacala burger and the savory prosciutto and seasonal vegetables stuffed inside foccacia. The menu changes daily, but you’ll always be able to end with one of the gorgeous desserts and, if you are lucky you’ll have had the Polpette di Piano–meatballs which are better than nonna’s. Run by four friendly and talented ladies (a mother, two daughters and a friend) the chef’s counter allow eaters to watch them as they prepare some of the best gourmet dishes and modern street food in their “laboratorio di cucina”, kitchen workshop. Outside there’s a serene patio lush with flowers, plants, trees and heat lamps for cool nights.
