City Guide: Rome
Il Sorpasso
Sorpasso is a locals' favorite and it's no wonder. They rarely get it wrong.
The Vatican isn’t exactly in the culinary heart of the city. But luckily just a short walk from Pope Francis’s home is a sweet little cafe and wine bar, Il Sorpasso. Good for an espresso and a pastry before a visit to Saint Peter’s, or after for a glass of wine, cocktail, a few of the vast selection of carefully curated formaggi (cheeses) and proscuitto. As with the cheese and salumi, the seasonal produce is procured from artisans and are highlighted in the simple and delicious dishes. This funky cafe is more than popular with the Prati locals who crowd the bar inside and congregate on the sidewalk, usually arriving for a drink after work. So before you plan a visit, it’s worth it to call ahead.
