City Guide: Rome
Biscottificio Innocenti
Step back in time at this classic bakery that serves the ultimate biscotti.
This quaint bakery originally opened by the Innocenti family back in 1929 and is now run under the watchful eye of granddaughter Stefania. The sweet aromas waft inside as they regularly produce over 50 different varieties of cookies, all of which are baked in their incredible 16m (52 foot) oven. (Fun fact: it was made to measure for the family back in the 1960s and still functions perfectly.) Now a Trastevere institution, the locals of can always be found popping into Innocenti for a quick treat and a catch up with local hero Stefania. The family recipes are all top-secret so don’t miss the chance to taste the ‘brutti ma buoni’ cookies made with egg whites, sugar, vanilla and hazelnuts or the rich, you-only-need-one, chocolate truffles.
